How Does Economy (Econ) Work in TFT?
How you earn, save and spend gold in Teamfight Tactics, from interest and streaks to when to roll or level up.
What is economy (econ) in TFT?
Economy, or econ, is how you manage gold in Teamfight Tactics. Each round you earn gold, and saved gold pays interest: 1 extra gold for every 10 you hold, up to 5 at 50 gold. Good econ means saving enough to earn interest while still spending at the right moments to level up, reroll the shop and stay healthy.
Where your gold comes from
- Passive income: a base amount of gold every round.
- Interest: 1 gold for every 10 gold you have at the start of the round, capped at 5 gold when you hold 50 or more.
- Streaks: winning or losing several rounds in a row gives bonus gold.
- Round wins and selling units also add gold.
Where your gold goes
- Rerolling the shop costs 2 gold and shows five new champions.
- Buying experience costs 4 gold for 4 XP, helping you reach higher levels and better shop odds.
- Buying champions to build and upgrade your team.
Common econ strategies
These are community strategies, not game rules. Many players save to 50 gold to get maximum interest, then spend only the extra. Others play fast 8, using gold mainly to level up and find stronger units, or do a big roll down, spending most of their gold at once to stabilize their board. Reroll comps often use a slow roll instead.
Example
You have 47 gold at the end of a round. Buying one more champion would drop you to 44 and cost you 1 interest gold next round. Selling a weak bench unit instead pushes you to 50 and gives you the full 5 interest.
When to break your econ
Saving gold only helps if you stay alive. When your health drops low, spending to strengthen your board is usually better than holding interest. If you want help reading these moments, our TFT coaches can review your games with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum interest in TFT?
5 gold per round, which you get by holding 50 gold or more at the start of the round.
Should I always stay at 50 gold?
No. 50 gold is a common target, but spending is better when you are losing too much health or need to hit your comp before others do.
