What Does Throw Mean in Gaming?

Losing a match or round that was clearly won because of avoidable mistakes, greed or overconfidence.

What does throwing mean in games?

To throw is to lose a game you were winning because of avoidable mistakes: a reckless fight, a greedy objective or a lapse in focus. The play itself is called a throw, and the player who made it is a thrower. Unlike inting, a throw is usually not intentional.

    Throwing vs. inting

Inting (from “intentionally feeding”) means dying on purpose to make your team lose, and it is punishable in most games. Throwing is a mistake: the player wants to win but makes a decision that hands the lead to the enemy. In chat, the two are often confused, but only inting breaks the rules.

    Typical throws in different games

    • League of Legends and Dota 2: chasing a kill into fog, starting Baron or Roshan without vision, or getting caught on a split push right before a fight.
    • Valorant and CS2: running out of time after taking control of the map, dry-peeking for a kill instead of playing the plant, or leaving the post-plant to hunt.
    • Rocket League: overcommitting for an aerial while leading, leaving an open net in the last seconds.
    • Battle royales: taking an unnecessary fight late in the match and losing a top-three position.

    How to stop throwing leads

    1. Slow down when ahead. A lead means the enemy needs to take risks, not you.
    2. Play for the objective, not for extra kills.
    3. Group before big plays, so one death does not turn into a lost fight.
    4. Watch the clock and the map before committing.

    Example

A Valorant team leads 12–9 and wins the opening duel of the next round. Instead of planting, two players push into the enemy spawn for more kills, get traded, and the round is lost 4v3. The team has thrown a won round.

    Throws and tilt

Players on tilt throw much more often, and a single throw is one of the fastest ways to tilt a whole team. Teams that stay calm after a big lead usually win more of their clutch moments too.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get banned for throwing?

Not for honest mistakes. Deliberately losing, which is inting or griefing, is reportable and can lead to penalties in most competitive games.

    What does “don’t throw” mean?

It is a reminder to play safe because the team is winning: avoid risky fights and close the game through objectives.
