What Is Crosshair Placement in CS2 and Valorant?
Keeping your crosshair at head height where an enemy is most likely to appear, so you barely need to move it to shoot.
What is crosshair placement?
Crosshair placement is where your crosshair sits while you move and wait. Good placement means keeping it at head height and on the spot where an enemy is most likely to appear, so when they do, you only need a tiny adjustment to hit. It is widely considered the most important aiming fundamental in CS2 and Valorant, more than flick speed.
Why crosshair placement matters
Every duel is a race. A player who has to drag the crosshair from the floor to an enemy’s head loses time to one who was already aiming there. With good placement, most kills come from a small correction instead of a big flick, which is faster and far more consistent under pressure.
The core rules
- Head height, always. Keep the crosshair at the height of an enemy’s head, adjusting for stairs, ramps and boxes.
- On the edge of the angle. Aim where an enemy would first appear when you clear a corner, not at the middle of the wall.
- Clear angles one at a time. Slice a corner gradually so only one spot can see you at once.
- Move with the crosshair ready. While walking, keep it where the next enemy could be, instead of looking at the floor or the minimap.
How to practice
- Walk through maps offline and check that your crosshair stays at head height around every corner.
- Play deathmatch focused on placement, not on kills.
- Review your deaths and notice how far you had to move your crosshair to find the enemy.
- Combine it with stopping. Placement only pays off if your first shot is accurate, so pair it with counter-strafing.
Example
On Mirage, you walk from Palace toward A with your crosshair at head level on the corner of the site. An enemy steps out exactly there, and you only need to click. Before practicing, you used to look at the floor and lose that same duel.
Crosshair placement vs. prefire
Crosshair placement is about where you aim at all times. Prefire is the next step: shooting at a likely spot before you see the enemy. Good placement also lets you take full advantage of peeker’s advantage when you swing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is crosshair placement more important than aim?
It is part of aim. Most players improve faster by fixing placement than by training flicks, because good placement makes difficult shots rare.
Does crosshair placement work the same in Valorant and CS2?
Yes. Both reward head-level placement and accurate first shots. The maps and angles change, but the principle is the same.
