What Is an Aerial in Rocket League?
Using jump and boost to fly your car and hit the ball in the air, one of the core mechanics of Rocket League.
What is an aerial in Rocket League?
An aerial is when you jump, point your car upward and boost to fly and hit the ball while it is in the air. It is one of Rocket League’s core mechanics: aerials let you reach high balls, block shots and score from above. They use boost, so knowing when to go up matters as much as knowing how.
How to do a basic aerial
- Jump to leave the ground.
- Tilt the car back so the nose points toward the ball.
- Hold boost to fly, adjusting your angle as you go.
- Meet the ball with the front of your car and aim where you want it to go.
Fast aerials and air roll
A fast aerial is a community technique that gets you up quicker: you jump, keep boosting, and use your second jump almost straight away while tilting back. Air roll rotates the car in the air, which helps you line up touches and land on your wheels. Both are worth learning once basic aerials feel comfortable.
When to go for an aerial
- You are clearly first to the ball. If a teammate is already going, stay back instead.
- You have enough boost to reach the ball and still recover.
- Missing won’t leave your goal open. Think about rotation before committing.
Example
The opponent lobs the ball toward your goal. You are the last player back, so instead of waiting for it to land, you take off with a fast aerial and clear it before their striker can reach it.
Aerials as a foundation
Most advanced mechanics start with a good aerial. An air dribble carries the ball with several touches while flying, and a flip reset uses contact with the ball to regain your flip mid-air. If you want help building these skills step by step, our Rocket League coaches can create a plan with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I practise aerials?
Use the game’s aerial training packs and free play. Start with slow balls, then work on fast aerials and recovering after each touch.
What is the difference between an aerial and an air dribble?
An aerial is usually a single touch in the air. An air dribble is a controlled sequence of touches while you keep the ball close to your car in the air.
