League of Legends Classic brings back old Summoner’s Rift, pre-rework champions, classic items, Runes, Masteries and some of the most chaotic strategies from LoL’s early years. Here’s everything you need to know.
League of Legends has spent more than 15 years changing almost everything about itself.
Champions were reworked. Items disappeared. Runes were rebuilt from the ground up. Summoner’s Rift changed. Entire playstyles that once terrorized solo queue slowly became stories veteran players tell newer ones.
Now, Riot Games has opened the vault.
League of Legends Classic is officially here, offering a separate gameplay experience built around the early years of Riot’s MOBA. Season 3 is a major inspiration, but Classic is not meant to be a perfect recreation of one specific historical patch.
Instead, Riot describes it as a kind of “greatest hits” version of early League, bringing together champions, builds, items and systems from different moments in the game’s past.
And yes, that means some truly cursed strategies are playable again.
League of Legends Classic is Riot’s attempt to recreate the feeling of early League without simply restoring one old version of the game and leaving it untouched forever.
The experience brings back the original-style Summoner’s Rift, old-school items, classic Runes and Masteries, older champion kits and gameplay mechanics associated with League’s first few seasons.
Season 3 acts as one of the main reference points, but Riot has intentionally pulled content from different eras.
That means some champions, items and strategies available in Classic may not have technically existed together during the exact same League patch.
The goal is less about historical accuracy and more about recreating the chaotic personality that defined early LoL.
Think AP Master Yi, AP Sion, AD Alistar, strange Gangplank builds and the terrifying old version of Kassadin.
For veteran players, those names probably already unlocked a few memories.
League of Legends Classic starts with a significantly smaller champion roster than modern LoL.
There are 60 champions available at launch.
The roster includes League’s original 40 champions alongside another 20 characters selected from champions released during the game’s early years.
The smaller pool is intentional.
Modern League features a massive roster that can make returning to the game after several years feel overwhelming. Classic reduces that learning curve by focusing on champions associated with the period Riot wants to recreate.
More champions are expected to arrive over time, although Riot does not plan to eventually import every modern League champion into Classic.
In other words, Classic is supposed to maintain its own identity.
One particularly notable absence is Yasuo.
Riot even joked about the champion while discussing the Classic roster.
Considering how dramatically Yasuo changed League’s mid-lane experience after his arrival, leaving him outside the initial Classic roster makes sense.
Some veteran players may consider that a feature by itself.
This is where League Classic gets much more interesting than simply putting old champions on an old map.
Several champions return with older versions of their abilities, allowing builds and playstyles that disappeared after Riot reworked them.
The most famous example is probably AP Master Yi.
Long before Master Yi became the attack-speed-focused melee carry modern players know, ability power builds could turn him into a bizarre burst mage capable of dealing huge damage while repeatedly resetting abilities during fights.
Then there is old Sion.
Modern Sion is a massive undead tank who charges into fights and refuses to stay dead. His original version was dramatically different and could be played as an AP burst champion capable of deleting enemies with his stun.
These are not simply weaker versions of current champions.
In several cases, they feel almost like completely different characters.
That gives Classic an interesting advantage for newer players: some of its “old” content may actually feel new if you never experienced early League.
Early League itemization was wild.
Classic embraces that.
Riot has brought back a large collection of items associated with the game’s early seasons, allowing players to recreate builds that disappeared years ago.
Among the returning names are classics such as:
Atma’s Impaler
Frozen Mallet
Deathfire Grasp
Warmog’s Armor
Old gold-generation items
Several other removed or heavily redesigned items
That also means legendary build combinations can return.
Veterans may remember Atmogs, a build centered around combining Atma’s Impaler with Warmog’s Armor.
It became part of a broader fighter-building philosophy sometimes referred to as the Metagolem, where bruisers stacked health, durability and damage until they became incredibly difficult to kill while still hitting hard.
Modern League itemization works very differently.
Classic allows players to experience why those combinations became infamous in the first place.
Another legendary item making its return is Deathfire Grasp, better known as DFG.
The item became synonymous with League’s burst-mage era.
Its active ability helped AP champions amplify their burst damage, making it an important part of some brutally fast kill combos.
For players who started League after DFG disappeared, Classic offers a chance to finally understand why the item is still mentioned more than a decade later.
Modern League combines much of its pre-game customization into the current Rune system.
Classic goes back further.
The old Rune and Mastery systems return as separate mechanics, recreating the setup players used during League’s earlier seasons.
Rune pages could be filled with stat bonuses designed around specific champions or strategies, while Mastery trees provided another layer of customization.
And yes, one particularly legendary strategy returns with them.
Veteran League players may immediately remember the famous 1% critical strike Rune.
Players would sometimes sacrifice a small amount of consistent stats for a tiny chance to randomly land a critical strike during the early laning phase.
Most of the time, nothing happened.
But when that 1% activated at exactly the right moment, an entire lane could suddenly swing because of pure RNG.
Was it optimal?
Not always.
Was it extremely funny when it worked?
Absolutely.
It is exactly the kind of weird early-League interaction Classic is designed to preserve.
Riot is bringing the old system back without recreating every frustrating part of it.
Classic Runes automatically use their highest available tier instead of forcing players through the old Rune progression grind.
Players begin with three Rune pages and can unlock additional pages through Classic progression.
Default Rune pages are also available immediately.
That is an important distinction between League Classic and a completely authentic legacy server.
Riot wants players to experience old League gameplay without necessarily restoring every inconvenience that came with playing the game in that era.
Masteries also unlock quickly through Classic progression.
So you get the nostalgic system without spending weeks trying to become competitive.
Another piece of ancient League terminology is returning.
Influence Points, or IP, are part of League Classic.
Before Blue Essence became League’s main free currency, players earned Influence Points by playing matches and spent them on champions and progression.
Classic brings that system back as part of its separate progression structure.
For newer League players, it is simply another currency.
For veterans, seeing “IP” again may be enough to cause psychic damage.
Items and champions are not the only things Riot dug out of League’s history.
Old Summoner Spells also return as part of the Classic experience.
One notable example is Fortify, a long-removed spell associated with League’s earliest years.
That means some Classic mechanics will be genuinely unfamiliar even to players who have spent years with modern League.
For veterans, these systems are nostalgia.
For newer players, they are almost entirely new mechanics.
League of Legends Classic also brings players back to an older version of Summoner’s Rift.
The map has changed dramatically throughout League’s history, both visually and mechanically.
Classic recreates the older identity of the Rift to match the champions, items and overall pacing of the experience.
That contributes heavily to the nostalgia factor, but the differences go beyond visuals.
Early League had a different rhythm.
Damage patterns were different. Objectives behaved differently. Vision worked differently. Champion mobility was dramatically lower across the overall roster.
Even familiar lanes can therefore feel surprisingly different from modern League.
League Classic is old League running with some very modern technology underneath it.
Rather than recreating every technical limitation from the early 2010s, Riot kept multiple improvements from the current version of the game.
Classic includes modern features such as:
Updated matchmaking
Modern server infrastructure
Performance improvements
Current ping systems
Spell buffering
Optional WASD controls
That last one is particularly strange in the best possible way.
You can experience strategies inspired by League from more than a decade ago while using WASD movement controlsthat never existed during the original era.
That summarizes Riot’s philosophy for Classic surprisingly well.
Preserve the fun parts of old League.
Leave some of the painful parts in the past.
Not every classic League mechanic is actually coming back.
Veteran players probably remember entering champion select and immediately typing their preferred position into chat.
“mid”
“top”
“ADC”
And, naturally:
“mid or feed.”
Riot has wisely decided that this particular piece of League history belongs in a museum.
League Classic uses a position-priority system instead.
Players rank their preferred roles and matchmaking attempts to place them into their higher-priority positions while avoiding their least preferred choices whenever possible.
Classic may recreate AP Yi.
It does not need to recreate arguments over who typed “mid” 0.3 seconds faster.
Playing League Classic increases a separate Classic Level.
This progression track is available to players and gradually unlocks parts of the experience.
Classic progression includes access to things such as:
Runes
Masteries
Influence Points
Additional Rune pages
Summoner progression
Cosmetic rewards
Access to The Council
One cosmetic connected to the system is Definitely Not Rusty Blitzcrank, a nod aimed directly at longtime League players.
But the most important Classic Level reward may be access to something much bigger.
League of Legends Classic is not supposed to remain frozen in time.
Riot has created The Council, a community voting system designed to help determine how Classic evolves.
Through The Council, players can influence future decisions including:
Which champions should be added
Which skins Riot should create for Classic
Potential gameplay changes
The overall direction of the experience
Players unlock Council access through their Classic Level.
More active Classic players can also gain increased voting power, giving players who spend more time with the experience additional influence over its future.
Riot will still control areas such as overall game health and balance.
But the company wants the Classic community to have a meaningful role in deciding what the game becomes next.
That is arguably one of League Classic’s most interesting ideas.
Instead of asking, “What if League went back to 2013?”
Classic could eventually ask:
“What if old League had evolved differently?”
League Classic will not preserve every broken champion and ridiculous strategy forever just because it once existed.
Riot plans to release regular balance updates for Classic.
However, those changes will follow a separate balance philosophy from modern League.
The goal is to keep Classic playable without removing the weirdness that makes Classic feel different.
That creates a difficult balancing act.
Part of early League’s appeal comes precisely from things that would probably be considered unhealthy by modern design standards.
Old Kassadin was infamous.
AP Yi could be ridiculous.
Some item combinations were absurd.
Certain champion kits would never survive untouched in current League.
If Riot sanitizes all of that, Classic risks becoming modern League with old graphics.
If everything remains completely broken, players may quickly remember why Riot changed those systems in the first place.
Finding the middle ground could determine the long-term future of Classic.
The League Classic celebration also extends beyond Summoner’s Rift.
Riot introduced ARAM: Mayhem Classic-ish, a limited-time experience inspired by Classic.
It features:
A Classic-inspired map
Old-school items
Classic-themed Augments
The same restricted pool of 60 champions
There is one major difference.
Champions in ARAM: Mayhem Classic-ish use their modern versions, not their Classic kits.
So players looking for the full pre-rework experience should stick with the main League Classic queue.
League Classic is available through the regular League of Legends client.
You do not need to install a separate Classic game.
If League of Legends is already installed, Classic is accessed through the existing client.
Champion ownership also carries over where applicable.
If you already own a champion included in the Classic roster, you can use that champion there.
Classic also features its own progression and ways to unlock characters, alongside a rotating selection of champions players can try.
Not really.
Nostalgia is obviously a huge part of the appeal.
Classic Summoner’s Rift, removed items, old champion kits, Rune pages and absurd forgotten builds exist specifically because players have spent years talking about them.
But Riot is not treating Classic like a museum exhibit.
Champions will be added.
Balance changes will happen.
Players will vote through The Council.
Modern technical improvements exist alongside old gameplay systems.
Classic therefore feels less like restoring an old League patch and more like creating an alternate version of League of Legends.
Veterans can revisit the game they remember.
Modern players can experience mechanics they have only heard about.
And Riot gets to explore an interesting question:
What happens when you take the most iconic parts of old-school League and let them evolve again?
Considering AP Master Yi, Deathfire Grasp and the 1% crit Rune are involved, the answer will probably involve a lot of chaos.
And that is exactly the point.
