VALORANT Changes Competitive Map Rotation: Abyss Returns as Breeze Leaves
VALORANT players have a new map pool to master.
Riot Games has officially changed the VALORANT competitive map rotation with Patch 13.04, bringing Abyss back into Competitive and Deathmatch while removing Breeze from both queues.
The update arrived on August 18, 2026, alongside the beginning of Act 5 and a collection of bug fixes aimed at Agents, stability issues, and melee skins. For ranked players, however, the biggest change is clear: it is time to say goodbye to the beaches of Breeze and return to the dangerous vertical battleground of Abyss.
For players preparing for another ranked climb, the rotation could have a noticeable impact on team compositions, strategies, and the maps worth practicing over the coming weeks.
Abyss Replaces Breeze in the VALORANT Competitive Map Pool
The headline change in VALORANT Patch 13.04 is straightforward.
Abyss is now available in Competitive and Deathmatch, while Breeze has been removed from both queues.
Although only one map is being swapped, the change can significantly affect the ranked experience. Breeze is known for its large open spaces and long-range engagements, while Abyss offers a very different style of play built around verticality, dangerous edges, and opportunities for creative utility usage.
Riot describes Abyss as a map where players can use its deadly drops for clever plays, with high-risk positioning potentially leading to high rewards.
That means players who became comfortable with Breeze during the previous rotation may need to adjust quickly.
Why Abyss Could Shake Up Ranked Matches
Abyss is one of VALORANT's most unusual maps.
Unlike the more traditional layouts found across much of the game, Abyss incorporates areas where players can actually fall off the map. It was originally introduced as VALORANT's first standard map without conventional outer boundaries, creating opportunities for both spectacular plays and spectacular mistakes.
Its return to Competitive should therefore reward players who understand positioning, utility lineups, rotations, and how to take advantage of the map's vertical spaces.
The shift from Breeze to Abyss may also change which Agents feel most comfortable in ranked matches. Breeze traditionally favors long sightlines and fights where range matters, while Abyss can encourage a different approach to map control.
For players chasing their next rank, relearning Abyss could be just as important as sharpening their aim.
Goodbye Breeze — At Least for Now
Breeze has once again left the Competitive rotation.
The tropical map has always been somewhat distinctive within VALORANT due to its wide spaces and long lines of sight. Riot's official description even highlights the importance of bringing cover, watching flanks, and preparing for long-range engagements.
Its removal does not mean Breeze is gone forever. VALORANT regularly rotates maps in and out of its competitive pool, allowing Riot to refresh the ranked experience while giving maps time away from the spotlight.
For players who loved Breeze, its absence might hurt.
For everyone who dreaded seeing it appear on the loading screen, Patch 13.04 might feel like an unexpected buff.
Patch 13.04 Includes More Than a Map Rotation
The map swap is the main attraction, but Riot also shipped several smaller fixes with VALORANT Patch 13.04.
Cypher received a fix for an incorrectly rotated Spycam minimap icon, while Riot addressed a visual problem affecting Viper's Snake Bite from an enemy player's perspective. A Deadlock GravNet issue involving players disconnecting and reconnecting was also corrected.
Riot additionally fixed a stability issue involving Clove. Rapidly switching between Meddle and Ruse could previously cause a player to freeze and disconnect.
On PC, transforming melee weapons such as Kuronami 2.0 and Nocturnum also received a fix for an issue that could prevent their transformation animations from working correctly during inspection.
None of these changes are likely to reshape the meta on their own, but together they make Patch 13.04 a useful cleanup update as players enter the new Act.
VALORANT Premier Is Also Getting a Shorter Stage
Competitive players involved in Premier should pay attention as well.
Riot confirmed that Premier Stage V26A5 will run for five weeks of matches instead of the usual seven. Teams reaching a Premier Score of at least 450 will qualify for the Playoffs on September 20, although qualification in Contender and Invite continues to depend on placement.
With fewer weeks than usual, teams may have less room for mistakes during the stage.
Combined with the map rotation, that gives competitive-minded players another reason to start practicing Abyss immediately.
Riot Is Already Teasing More VALORANT News for September
Patch 13.04 may be relatively small, but Riot has hinted that something bigger is coming.
In the official patch notes, the developer told players to watch for news in September and teased both a new Dev Update and additional game updates. Riot has not yet revealed exactly what those announcements will contain.
That makes Patch 13.04 feel less like a major overhaul and more like the beginning of the next phase for VALORANT.
For now, though, ranked players have one immediate mission.

Is the New VALORANT Map Rotation Good for Ranked?
Replacing Breeze with Abyss should make the opening of Act 5 feel noticeably different for regular Competitive players.
The two maps reward different strengths, and anyone who spent the previous rotation refining Breeze strategies now has another environment to prepare for. Abyss brings verticality, unconventional positioning, dangerous drops, and plenty of opportunities for utility-heavy plays back into ranked matchmaking.
Whether that is exciting or terrifying probably depends on how many times you have fallen off the map.
Either way, VALORANT Patch 13.04 is live, Abyss is back in Competitive, and Breeze is officially out of the rotation.
