Fortnite’s permanent no-building mode: the same Battle Royale, but fights are won with aim, cover and movement instead of builds.
What is Zero Build in Fortnite?
Zero Build is Fortnite’s Battle Royale without building. You can’t place walls, ramps or floors, so fights are decided by aim, positioning, cover and movement. Epic launched it as a permanent mode in 2022, and it runs alongside the classic mode with building.
What changes without building
- No builds or edits: you can’t create instant cover, so natural cover like rocks, trees and buildings matters much more.
- Extra protection: Zero Build has given players a recharging Overshield that absorbs damage before your shield and health.
- Movement is your defence: sprinting, mantling onto ledges and mobility items replace building as the way to escape or take high ground.
- Same goal: you still win a Victory Royale by being the last player or team alive.

Tips for Zero Build
- Move from cover to cover and avoid crossing open fields without a plan.
- Rotate early with the storm, since you can’t build your way to safety.
- Let your Overshield recharge before taking the next fight.
- Use height when you have it: it is harder to take in Zero Build, so don’t give it up for free.
Example
An enemy shoots at you in an open field. In Build mode you would wall up. In Zero Build you sprint to the nearest rock, wait for your Overshield to come back, then peek from the side the enemy isn’t watching.
