How Does the Pity System Work in Genshin Impact?
The guarantee rules behind Genshin Impact’s Wishes: a 4-star or 5-star after a set number of pulls, the 50/50 and Capturing Radiance.
What is pity in Genshin Impact?
Pity is the community name for Genshin Impact’s Wish guarantee. Each Wish type keeps a counter, and after a set number of Wishes without a 5-star (or a 4-star), the next one is guaranteed. On character event banners there is a second layer: if your 5-star is not the featured character, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be. The exact numbers are listed under Details on the Wish screen.
The two guarantees
- Rarity guarantee: within a set number of Wishes you are guaranteed at least one 4-star item and, over a longer count, a 5-star.
- Featured guarantee: on character event banners, a 5-star that is not the featured character makes your next 5-star the featured one. Players call this “losing the 50/50”.
- Counters carry over: your count is kept between banners of the same type, so it isn’t lost when a banner ends.
Pity by banner
| Wish type | How the guarantee works |
|---|---|
| Character Event Wish (and Wish-2) | Both share one counter. Includes the featured guarantee and Capturing Radiance. |
| Weapon Event Wish (Epitome Invocation) | Separate counter. Epitomized Path lets you chart one featured weapon; since Version 5.0 it needs only 1 Fate Point. |
| Standard Wish (Wanderlust Invocation) | Separate counter. No featured character, so there is no featured guarantee. |
Capturing Radiance
Added in Version 5.0, Capturing Radiance gives character banners an extra chance to win the featured character even when you would have lost the 50/50. HoYoverse states that the base chance of triggering it is 0.018%, that the consolidated probability of a 5-star being the featured character is 55%, and that if the featured character was your second 5-star on three consecutive occasions, Capturing Radiance is guaranteed to trigger next time.
Example
You get a 5-star on the character banner, but it is a standard character. Your next 5-star on any character event banner is now guaranteed to be the featured character, so you save Primogems for the banner you really want.
Soft pity and hard pity
Players say hard pity for the Wish where a 5-star is guaranteed, and soft pity for the point where odds seem to rise before that. Soft pity is a community observation from pull data, not a term in HoYoverse’s rules, so treat any number attached to it as an estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
