What Is a Force Buy in CS2 and Valorant?
Spending almost all your money on weaker weapons and gear when you cannot afford a full buy, instead of saving.
What is a force buy?
A force buy is when a team spends most of its money even though it cannot afford a full buy, using cheaper weapons and less utility instead of saving for the next round. Teams force when a round is too important to give up, or to break the enemy’s economy. It is the opposite of an eco round, where the team saves.
When teams force
- After losing the pistol round: the classic second-round force, hoping to win and break the enemy’s economy.
- On match or half point: when losing the round would decide the half or the game anyway.
- When the enemy is also weak: a force against an enemy force or eco gives a fair chance.
- When the loss bonus is high: a high bonus softens the cost if the force fails.
Economy basics behind a force
| Game | Loss bonus | Typical force buy |
|---|---|---|
| CS2 | $1,400 rising $500 per consecutive loss up to $3,400; a win drops it one step instead of resetting it | SMGs like the MAC-10 or MP9, Galil AR or FAMAS, Desert Eagle, armor and a few grenades |
| Valorant | 1,900 after one loss, 2,400 after two, 2,900 after three or more | Spectre, Stinger, Bulldog or Marshal, Sheriff, light shields and some abilities |
Because the loss bonus grows, a failed force can leave the team broke for the next round, so it should be a group decision, usually called by the IGL.
How to win a force round
- Play close. SMGs and shotguns are strong at short range; avoid long angles against rifles.
- Stack or rush a site to create a numbers advantage at one point.
- Play for [trades](term:trade-kill). Cheap weapons win when several players hit the same enemy.
- Spend on [utility](term:utility) that matters, like a flash for the entry, rather than buying everything.
Example
A CS2 team loses the pistol round. Instead of saving, all five buy MAC-10s and armor, rush B together and win a short-range fight against rifles. The enemy now has to buy with less money, and the economy swings in the forcing team’s favor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a force buy and a half buy?
A half buy spends part of the money and keeps enough for a good next round. A force spends nearly everything now, accepting a weak next round if it fails.
Why do teams sometimes force after a pistol loss and sometimes save?
It depends on the map, the team’s style and the enemy. Some teams prefer to save and guarantee a full buy in round three; others force to take the initiative.
