What Does DPS Mean in WoW?

Damage per second, the main measure of a damage dealer’s output, and also the name of the damage role itself in World of Warcraft.

What does DPS mean in WoW?

DPS means damage per second: the average damage a player deals over a fight. In World of Warcraft it also names the damage role, so a group of “one tank, one healer and three DPS” means three damage dealers. Higher DPS shortens fights and helps beat damage checks in raids and Mythic+.

DPS as a number and as a role

  • The metric: total damage divided by the fight’s duration. It is the standard way to compare damage output.
  • The role: every class has damage specializations, and group finders list players as tank, healer or DPS.

How DPS is measured

In Midnight, WoW includes a built-in damage meter. It is off by default and can be turned on under Options > Gameplay Enhancements > Damage Meter. It tracks damage, healing and other stats per player. Combat log sites such as Warcraft Logs are also used to review fights in detail.

What affects your DPS

  • Rotation: using your abilities in the right order and not wasting cooldowns.
  • Uptime: staying active while dodging mechanics. Time spent not attacking is lost damage.
  • Gear: higher item level and the right stats; BiS lists show which items help most.
  • Fight type: single-target bosses and large packs of enemies reward different talents.

Example

Two players deal the same total damage, but one survives the whole boss fight while the other dies halfway. The survivor ends with higher DPS for the group, because a dead player deals no damage.

DPS isn’t everything

Doing the mechanics, interrupting spells and staying alive often matter more than a few extra points on the meter. A group that wipes because of a missed mechanic gets no value from high DPS.
