What Is a Cooldown in Games?
The waiting time before an ability, item or spell can be used again, often shortened to CD.
What does cooldown mean in games?
A cooldown (or CD) is the time you must wait after using an ability, item or spell before you can use it again. An ability that is unavailable is on cooldown. Tracking your own cooldowns, and especially the enemy’s, is one of the clearest differences between average and good players.
Cooldowns in different games
| Game | How cooldowns work |
|---|---|
| League of Legends | Abilities and summoner spells have cooldowns; Ability Haste shortens them, with 100 Ability Haste halving them. Flash has one of the longest, which is why players call “Flash down” |
| World of Warcraft | Big damage and defensive spells have long cooldowns, and most actions also trigger the global cooldown (GCD), which haste can shorten |
| Dota 2 | Abilities and many items have cooldowns; some items reduce them |
| Valorant | Most abilities are bought each round; signature abilities recharge over time or with kills |
Why tracking cooldowns wins fights
- Engage when key enemy abilities are down. An enemy without escape or crowd control is an easy target.
- Call it. “Flash down mid” or “no ult on their tank” gives your team a window to act.
- Respect enemy cooldowns. If their main ability is ready, wait until it is used before committing.
- Line up your own. Saving big cooldowns for the right moment, like a raid’s burn phase, is how players improve their parse.
Example
The enemy mid laner uses Flash to escape a gank. Your jungler types the time in chat. For the next few minutes, the mid laner has no escape, so your team ganks again and gets the kill.
Cooldowns and power spikes
Some items and level-ups reduce cooldowns sharply, letting champions use abilities far more often. That is part of many power spikes: more uses of your best ability per fight means more damage and more control.
