What Does Carry Mean in Gaming?
A player or role that wins the game for the team, usually by scaling into the main source of damage.
What does carry mean in games?
To carry is to win a match mostly through your own performance, “carrying” teammates to victory. The word also names a role: the character a team builds around to deal most of the damage later in the game. When someone says they were carried, they mean a teammate did most of the work.
Carry as a role
| Game | Who the carry is |
|---|---|
| League of Legends | Mostly the ADC (bot lane), plus mid laners and some top laners and junglers who scale well |
| Dota 2 | The position 1, or hard carry, who farms safely early and dominates late |
| Teamfight Tactics | The carry unit that receives the best items and deals most of the board’s damage |
| Shooters | No fixed role; the player with the most impact in a match is said to carry |
What makes a good carry
- Farming efficiently, to hit each power spike before the enemy.
- Staying alive. A carry who dies first in every fight cannot deal damage.
- Positioning in fights, hitting what is in range while the team protects you.
- Knowing when to take over: the moment your items or levels let you decide fights.
Example
In Dota 2, the position 1 farms the safe lane for 20 minutes with little impact. After finishing two core items, they win every fight and end the game: a classic hard carry. In TFT, a player stacks three damage items on one unit, and that unit wins most fights on its own.
Being carried
“Carried” is often used to downplay a win (“he got carried by the jungler”). A high KDA or damage share usually shows who carried. In Teamfight Tactics, choosing the right carry for your composition is one of the most important decisions of the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the carry always the player with the most kills?
Not always. Kills help, but the carry is the one with the most impact: damage dealt, objectives taken and fights won.
What is a hard carry?
A character, especially in Dota 2, that is weak early but becomes the strongest unit late, if the team gives it time and farm.
