What Is an Armor Swap in Apex Legends?
Restoring your shields mid-fight by taking armor from a deathbox instead of using shield cells or batteries.
What is an armor swap in Apex Legends?
An armor swap is restoring your shields during a fight by taking armor from a deathbox, usually from the enemy you just knocked out, instead of spending time on shield cells or batteries. It is much faster than healing, so good players swap the moment their shield breaks to stay in the fight.
Why armor swapping is so strong
- Speed: a swap is far quicker than using batteries or cells.
- Full shields mid-fight: you can take the next duel with fresh shields instead of cracked armor.
- Momentum: in a third party, swapping lets you keep fighting instead of retreating to heal.
How it works today
The rules have changed over the seasons. Since Season 20, body shields no longer spawn as floor loot, and armor is gained from what deathboxes contain rather than by picking up another player’s exact shield. Later seasons kept adjusting armor and Evo progression, so check the current season’s patch notes for the exact behaviour.
Tips for swapping well
- Fight near deathboxes: after a knock-down, the next box is your fastest heal.
- Use cover: swap behind a wall or door, not in the open.
- Communicate: tell your team which box you are taking so two players don’t queue on the same one.
- Combine with abilities: many Legend abilities, such as smokes or walls, buy time to swap safely.
Example
You knock an enemy and your own shield breaks. Instead of backing off to use batteries, you step behind the deathbox, swap in a second and win the next fight with full shields.
Swap or heal?
If there is a deathbox close and safe to reach, swapping is almost always faster. If not, heal behind cover. If you want help with fight decisions like these, our Apex Legends coaches can review your games.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does armor swapping still work in Apex Legends?
Yes, but it works differently than in early seasons. Since Season 20, armor comes from deathboxes rather than floor loot, and rules keep changing, so check the current patch notes.
Is armor swapping faster than using batteries?
Yes. That is why players swap mid-fight whenever a deathbox is close enough.
