Destiny 2 was supposed to be winding down.
Now Bungie is saying the exact opposite.
Only months after announcing the end of active live-service development for Destiny 2, Bungie has revealed a major change in direction for the franchise.
The studio has officially confirmed that work has begun to bring vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids back into the game — while also promising new stories, new worlds and a long-term future for Destiny.
For Guardians who thought the journey was over, the message from Bungie could not be much clearer:
Destiny is not finished.
On September 17, 2026, Bungie’s new leadership shared a major update about the future of the studio, Destiny and Marathon.
The biggest announcement was simple:
“Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future.”
Bungie also confirmed:
“We are not done with Destiny.”
That represents a massive shift from where Destiny 2 was just a few months ago.
In May 2026, Bungie announced that Monument of Triumph would become Destiny 2’s final planned live-service content update.
The update launched on June 9, followed by what Bungie called the game’s final major patch.
Destiny 2 would remain playable, but active development was effectively coming to an end.
At least, that was the plan.
Now Bungie has changed course.
The first major step in Destiny’s new direction will be restoring parts of Destiny 2 that players can no longer experience.
Bungie confirmed that development has started on bringing back:
Vaulted campaigns
Vaulted destinations
Vaulted raids
Even better, Bungie says this restored content will be available to all Destiny 2 players.
The studio also directly acknowledged how controversial the Destiny Content Vault became.
Over the years, some of Destiny 2’s biggest locations, campaigns and activities disappeared from the live game, making huge parts of its history impossible for newer players to experience.
Bungie now wants to change that.
Bungie has not yet confirmed exactly which campaign will return first.
However, the Destiny Content Vault contains several major campaigns that disappeared from the game.
Some of the biggest include:
Destiny 2’s original campaign launched in 2017 and followed Dominus Ghaul’s invasion of the Last City.
For years, new Destiny players have been unable to experience the original beginning of Destiny 2.
Bringing The Red War back would immediately make the game’s story much easier to understand for newcomers.
The first Destiny 2 expansion took Guardians to Mercury and expanded the story of Osiris and the Infinite Forest.
Both the campaign and Mercury were later vaulted.
Warmind introduced Mars, Rasputin, Ana Bray and some of the most recognizable locations from Destiny 2’s early years.
The campaign was removed when the Destiny Content Vault was introduced.
And then there is Forsaken.
One of Destiny 2’s most important expansions, Forsaken featured Cayde-6, Uldren Sov, the Scorn and the Tangled Shore.
Its campaign was vaulted in 2022.
If Bungie eventually restores Forsaken, it could become one of the biggest returning pieces of Destiny content.
For now, though, none of these campaigns has been individually confirmed.
Bungie has only confirmed that vaulted campaigns are being restored.
Campaigns are only one part of the plan.
Bungie also confirmed that vaulted destinations are being worked on.
Destiny 2 has lost a huge number of locations throughout its lifetime, including:
Titan
Io
Mercury
Mars
The Leviathan
Tangled Shore
The Farm
Some of these locations were home to strikes, quests, secrets, patrol activities and exotic missions that have not been accessible for years.
Their return could dramatically expand the explorable Destiny 2 universe.
For endgame players, this might be the biggest announcement of all.
Bungie specifically confirmed that vaulted raids are part of the restoration project.
Several classic Destiny 2 raids disappeared when the Content Vault was introduced, including:
Leviathan
Eater of Worlds
Spire of Stars
Scourge of the Past
Crown of Sorrow
Bungie has not confirmed which raid will return first, but the possibilities are huge.
Destiny raids have always been some of the franchise’s most memorable experiences, combining mechanical coordination, high-level PvE combat and some of the most desirable rewards in the game.
Reintroducing these activities could give both veteran Guardians and completely new fireteams another reason to return.
This will not be a simple copy-and-paste job.
Destiny 2 has changed significantly since much of this content was removed.
According to Bungie, returning activities need work across areas including:
Lighting
Encounters
Combatants
Underlying game systems
That means the restored content needs to be adapted to modern Destiny 2 before it can return.
Bungie has warned that this process will take time.
This also means players should not expect every vaulted campaign, planet and raid to suddenly appear in one massive update.
The restoration looks much more like a long-term project.
That is what makes this announcement so surprising.
On June 9, Bungie released Destiny 2: Monument of Triumph.
It was designed as a celebration of nearly a decade of Destiny 2.
The update brought major changes across the game, including the return of the Director, updated destination rewards, activity difficulty changes, new Exotic catalysts, expanded Vault space, a new Pantheon and the return of Sparrow Racing League.
It was also supposed to be Destiny 2’s final major update.
Three months later, Bungie is now talking about rebuilding Destiny instead.
That is a dramatic turnaround.
Bungie says the Destiny community played an important role.
According to the studio, players reacted strongly when Monument of Triumph was announced as the final Destiny 2 content update.
That response reminded Bungie how important Destiny, its history and its future still are to its community.
The studio has also acknowledged that vaulting content damaged player trust and made Destiny’s history harder to experience.
Restoring that content is now being positioned as the first step toward rebuilding that relationship.
The most interesting part of Bungie’s announcement may actually be what comes after the unvaulting project.
Bungie says Destiny still has:
“more stories to tell” and “new worlds to build.”
The studio describes the restoration of Destiny 2 content as the first step toward laying the foundation for new stories and games.
That wording matters.
Bungie is clearly planning a future for the Destiny universe beyond simply maintaining Destiny 2.
What exactly that future looks like remains unknown.
For active Guardians, this creates a completely different outlook for Destiny 2.
Instead of a game permanently entering maintenance mode, Destiny 2 could gradually become a much larger archive of its own history.
Veterans could revisit raids and destinations they have not seen in years.
New players could finally experience campaigns that explain major characters and events.
And returning endgame activities could create a fresh grind for raid completions, weapons, Triumphs, Titles and other rewards.
That could also mean a new wave of players looking to prepare their Guardians for difficult PvE content.
Whether you're chasing Destiny 2 raid completions, dungeon clears, Triumphs, Exotic weapons, high-level PvE progression or improving your gameplay with coaching, the return of classic endgame activities could make the grind much bigger again.
Destiny 2 was supposed to be approaching the end of its journey.
Instead, Bungie is reopening the Vault.
Classic campaigns are being restored. Old destinations are being rebuilt. Vaulted raids are being prepared for modern Destiny 2.
And Bungie is once again talking about the future of Destiny.
We still do not know what returns first or when Guardians will be able to play it.
But one thing is official:
Bungie is not done with Destiny.
And for the first time in months, the future of Destiny 2 looks wide open.
Destiny 2 is getting a new future. Bungie confirms plans to restore vaulted campaigns, raids and destinations as it begins rebuilding Destiny.
